South African billionaire and Capitec Bank co-founder Michiel Le Roux has donated more than R208 million to the Democratic Alliance (DA) over the past five years, making him the largest individual donor to a South African political party during the period.
The figures, reported by Billionaires.Africa and compiled from political funding disclosures, show that Le Roux’s contributions were made through three investment and trust vehicles linked to him: Fynbos Ekwiteit, Fynbos Kapitaal and Fynbos Trust.
Fynbos Ekwiteit contributed about R110.1 million, while Fynbos Kapitaal contributed approximately R98 million. A further R271,000 was donated through Fynbos Trust.
Together, the contributions amount to roughly $13 million, based on the exchange rate used in the report.
One of the DA’s biggest sources of private funding
The scale of Le Roux’s donations is significant when compared with the DA’s overall disclosed private funding.
Since 2021, South African political parties have declared at least R1.14 billion in private donations. Of that amount, the DA accounts for approximately R523 million, with Le Roux’s contributions making up a substantial portion.
The disclosures are required under South Africa’s Political Party Funding Act, which came into effect in April 2021. The legislation requires political parties and other political actors to disclose private donations above prescribed thresholds.
The law also places limits on how much a single donor can contribute to a political party in one financial year.
How Le Roux made his fortune
Le Roux built his fortune through Capitec Bank, which he co-founded in 2001 alongside Jannie Mouton and Riaan Stassen.
He served as Capitec’s chief executive during its early years and later became chairman. The bank has since grown into one of South Africa’s largest retail banking groups.
Le Roux remains a major Capitec shareholder, with his stake contributing significantly to his billionaire status. The rapid expansion of Capitec has made him one of South Africa’s wealthiest individuals.
His financial involvement, however, extends beyond politics. He has also supported initiatives involving education, democracy and political reform.
Political funding draws attention
The size of Le Roux’s contributions highlights the growing role of wealthy individuals in South African politics. Large private donations can provide political parties with significant resources for campaigning, administration and other activities.
At the same time, political funding disclosures provide the public with greater visibility into major sources of party financing.
The latest figures place Le Roux among a small group of South African business figures whose personal wealth allows them to make donations capable of significantly influencing political funding structures.
