A βclean-upβ campaign by March and March members in Durban turned violent on Thursday when protesters confronted refugees camping outside the Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre on Che Guevara Road.
The refugees have reportedly been staying outside the facility for more than three months. Tensions escalated after some migrants alleged that their belongings had been taken.
At least five people were hospitalised. Police intervened using crowd-control measures after stones were thrown, with one police officer reportedly struck.
SAPS arrested a foreign national for allegedly assaulting the officer and opened a public violence investigation. Police say calm has since been restored.
