Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced additional funding and personnel to strengthen the province’s response to gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) and improve support for survivors.

The announcement was made on Friday, 2 October 2026, following an urgent meeting involving provincial mayors, municipal managers and law-enforcement agencies.

The province will strengthen 131 Green Doors, which provide safe spaces and support for GBVF survivors, while continuing assistance to 115 NGOs working with victims.

More than 1,000 GBVF brigades will also receive additional support and be deployed across 122 high-priority police precincts to help monitor communities and identify risks linked to GBVF.

The measures come amid renewed concern over the killings of women in and around Ekurhuleni.

The provincial response follows directives from President Cyril Ramaphosa, including a 60-day mandate for municipalities to address safety hazards such as broken streetlights and abandoned buildings.

Lesufi said the province would strengthen coordination between government, law enforcement, municipalities and community organisations to improve prevention, protection and support for GBVF survivors.
