The 2026/27 Betway Premiership is already beginning to deliver the heavyweight battle many supporters expected, with Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs occupying the top three positions after the latest round of matches.
Mamelodi Sundowns are setting the pace. After six matches, the champions have collected 16 points, winning five, drawing one and remaining unbeaten. Their 15 goals scored also underline the attacking threat they have carried into the new campaign. Sundowns are once again showing why they remain the benchmark in South African football.
But Orlando Pirates are refusing to let them disappear over the horizon. The Buccaneers have played five matches and collected 13 points, winning four and drawing one. Their numbers are particularly impressive at the back, with Pirates conceding just one goal while scoring 12. A goal difference of +11 tells its own story.
Then there is Kaizer Chiefs, sitting third on 11 points after five games. Amakhosi remain unbeaten, with three wins and two draws, and their latest 3–2 victory over Siwelele ensured they stayed firmly within touching distance of the top two.
The difference between the three is currently small enough to make the title race extremely interesting. Sundowns have 16 points, Pirates 13, and Chiefs 11. With Chiefs and Pirates having played one game fewer than Sundowns, the picture could change quickly when the outstanding fixtures are completed.
What makes this even more intriguing is how differently the three clubs have started. Sundowns are producing goals and collecting points consistently. Pirates are looking incredibly difficult to break down. Chiefs are showing resilience and finding ways to remain unbeaten.
There is obviously a long way to go, and five or six matches cannot determine who will eventually lift the trophy. But the early table has already produced something South African football has been waiting for: the Big Three sitting together at the summit.
Sundowns have the experience of champions. Pirates have the defensive numbers of a serious challenger. Chiefs have started the campaign with renewed belief.
Three giants. Three approaches. One prize.
And if the opening weeks are anything to go by, this could be a title race worth watching all the way to the finish.
