Women are being urged to remain vigilant when walking, exercising or travelling, particularly in isolated or poorly lit areas.
The safety warning comes following the recent discovery of the bodies of four women in the Kempton Park and Rhodesfield area, prompting calls for women to take extra precautions.
While the incident occurred outside Soweto, the safety advice is relevant to women across different communities.
Women are encouraged to:
– Avoid walking or exercising alone, especially in isolated areas.
– Choose busy, well-lit routes and areas with visible CCTV where possible.
– Plan your route before leaving home and let someone know where you are going.
– Keep your phone charged and stay connected with family or trusted friends.
– Avoid distractions such as headphones when walking.
– Trust your instincts and leave immediately if a situation or person makes you uncomfortable.
– Use reliable transport, including trusted public transport or e-hailing services.
– Report suspicious people, vehicles or activity to the police.
– Look out for one another and alert friends, family and fellow community members when something appears unsafe.
