The M1 Freeway is closed in both directions at Smit Street in Johannesburg following protest action by members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) over wage disputes.

According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the closures affect the northbound and southbound carriageways around the Braamfontein and Johannesburg CBD interchange.

JMPD officers have been deployed to manage traffic and implement diversions, with heavy congestion and significant delays expected along the M1 corridor.

Motorists are urged to avoid the affected area and use alternative routes, including the M2, N1 Western Bypass and other surrounding roads where appropriate.

Drivers are advised to follow instructions from traffic officers, approach diversions with caution and allow extra travel time.
