The City of Johannesburg has launched a next-generation electric bus trial aimed at exploring cleaner and more sustainable public transport options across the city.
MMC for Transport Cllr Kenny Kunene officially launched the trial, which will involve electric buses operating on selected Metrobus and Rea Vaya BRT routes over the next 30 to 60 days.

The buses will be tested across key corridors in Soweto, Sandton, the Johannesburg CBD, Roodepoort and other parts of Johannesburg.

Kunene was joined at the launch by Lutando Maboza, Executive Director for Transport; Dr Bongani Radebe, Managing Director of Metrobus; representatives from U40 Cities; and executives from leading South African Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
The trial is expected to provide the City with practical insights into the performance and suitability of electric buses for Johannesburg’s public transport network, including their potential role in cleaner and more efficient urban mobility.
